I hope you enjoyed American Education Week. If you did not have an opportunity to visit, you missed out on a terrific chance to get a terrific picture of a "day in the life" of your child's educational experience.

The week of November 23 is B week. Weeks alternate.

Children are expected to be able to read all sight words without the need for decoding (sounding out). Children should also be able to spell the words correctly in their writing.

We are off to a terrific start to the school year. I am extremely happy with the progress that we have made thus far. Just a few examples of what we have accomplished and/or are working on:

The unit 3 math assessment is complete! You will receive the test next Tuesday or Wednesday. I am very proud of all the children for a job well done.

Objectives covered during Unit 3:

1. determine the value of a set of coins
2. compare the value of 2 sets of coins
3. tell time to the nearest 1/2 hour
4. solve addition and subtraction basic facts
5. skip count by 2, 5, and 10
6. solve word problems using addition and subtraction
7. identify and continue patterns

• to ensure that every child receives reading instruction that is most appropriate for him/her, we have regrouped for reading - some children stay with me while other children go to a different first grade teacher - placements are flexible and will change when appropriate
• We are becoming writers by writing personal narratives. We are focusing on writing with a beginning, middle, and end. We are also taking a close look at how to include details.
